Golf TSI or Elantra GT Sport?
Golf is a bit cheaper, a bit slower, and a bit better on gas.
Elantra has better reliability record but isn’t as “sporty” supposedly.
Which one would you buy?

I personally can’t stand the look of the Hyundai. It’s too droopy and too angery.
I personally would get the Golf TSI, as it’s a bit less obnoxious about its looks, and as you mentioned, it’s cheaper overall both in terms of purchase price and fuel costs.

The Elantra, based on reliability(the much older elantra I had was/is a tank), possibly cheaper parts prices and or repair bills, I think it will look better than the vw over the years.

Elantra by far...I’ve had great reliability with my Accent and I’ve always found VW products to look a bit bland, personally.

I would never buy a Volkswagen with the 1.8t.
I bought a 2016 Jetta, had it for a year, then bought a truck because it kept breaking. So I gave it to a family member to use. Then the family member gave it back because it kept breaking.

Are you talking about 2018? Also North America?

Golf all day. I loved mine. Plus if you get bored you can go big turbo and have the ultimate sleeper. https://www.goapr.com/products/ecu_upgrade_18tsi_gen3_mqb.html

I haven’t driven the current Elantra, but I really enjoy the Golf TSI.
Any concerns about VW reliability should be at least offset by the much longer VW warranty for model year 2018.

What was wrong with it?

Everything

I suggest the Elantra GT Sport. I think they are trying to over achieve with the car. But drive both and see what trips your trigger.

Elantra for reliability and everything related to that, Golf for everything else.

I’ll take the Golf. It drives well, is nicer to be in inside and sips fuel. I’d personally say it’s styled better too.
